  • 🇹🇷 Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is a unique blend of rich history and rapid urban development, where the challenge is to balance its increasing population with sustainable and inclusive mobility options. With its strategic location connecting Europe and Asia, the city’s active mobility solutions will play a crucial role in shaping sustainable urban transport models.
  • 🇪🇸 Located in the Greater Madrid area, Las Rozas is known for its high quality of life, green spaces, and active community. However, like many suburban areas, it faces challenges in promoting sustainable transport options and reducing car dependency. The AMIGOS project will support the city in enhancing its active mobility offerings by planning the introduction of safer cycling paths, improved pedestrian zones, and innovative public transport solutions that cater to both residents and visitors.
  • 🇫🇮 Known for its commitment to sustainability, the City of Lappeenranta is a small city located near the Russian border. As a Green Leaf Award winner, Lappeenranta is dedicated to promoting eco-friendly transport and reducing its carbon footprint. However, the city faces the challenge of the long-shaped city with long distances to the city center and a limited population. Through the AMIGOS project, Lappeenranta will be working to increase the use of public transport, eletric and biogas traffic🌿
  • 🇧🇬 Nestled in the heart of Bulgaria, Gabrovo is a city with a strong cultural heritage and a reputation for its green surroundings. Despite its small size, Gabrovo is ambitiously tackling the challenge of creating a more connected and inclusive transport network that serves all its citizens. The city aims to promote public transport, reduce driving, and enhance accessibility, all while minimising emissions. 🌳
  • 🇱🇻 Known for its stunning coastline and rich natural landscapes, Jūrmala is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Through the AMIGOS project, Jūrmala will be working on its school district area, currently hindered by poorly coordinated traffic flows and a lack of proper pedestrian infrastructure, making it unsafe for residents and students who rely on these streets daily. The aim will be to change resident behaviour and reorganise traffic to ensure the safe and comfortable movement of all road users, with a particular focus on morning peak hours.
  • 🇮🇹 Bologna aims to address key challenges such as raising awareness among stakeholders, boosting local skills and competencies, and adapting existing information packages and signage to better serve diverse users. By focusing on these areas, the city is striving to make its tourism infrastructure more welcoming and accessible, promoting safer exploration of its historic streets and landmarks for everyone.
  • 🇮🇸 The City of Reykjavik is currently transforming Hlemmur Square, a historic mobility hub that has long catered to heavy car traffic while lacking appeal for pedestrians and cyclists. The ongoing redevelopment aims to create a pedestrian-friendly environment by prohibiting private vehicle access and reallocating space for cyclists and pedestrians and public transport users while enhancing connectivity to the city center.
By prioritizing safety, security, and inclusion, the project seeks to improve air quality and accessibility for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
  • 🇮🇱 Situated in a historic district, Nazareth is home to a highly trafficked intersection near Mary’s Well and the Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, drawing significant tourist activity. This bustling area also serves local schools and hotels, making pedestrian safety and accessibility paramount, particularly for vulnerable groups. Through the AMIGOS project, our partner Ayalon Highways Nazareth aims to improve pedestrian accessibility to key sites and local amenities, ensuring that the safety of all road users is enhanced without compromising the level of service for vehicular traffic.
  • 🇹🇷 Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, is characterized by its bustling streets. However, the city faces significant challenges, particularly in its transportation systems. High traffic volumes in key areas lead to congestion, posing safety risks for both pedestrians and cyclists. This is especially concerning in busy districts that cater to tourists and local residents alike. The lack of effective infrastructure for active mobility and the need for improved accessibility create barriers for vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly. Additionally, the city’s historic districts require careful planning to ensure that any enhancements respect the cultural heritage while providing safer routes for all users. But there is a strong commitment to transforming its transportation landscape to promote safety, accessibility, and sustainable travel options for everyone. 🌟
  • 🇩🇪 Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg’s bustling streets reflect its population of nearly 1.9 million and its status as a European transport crossroads, supported by extensive bus, metro, train, and ferry networks. Yet, the city faces challenges in promoting safe, inclusive, and active mobility, particularly in residential areas where pedestrians, cyclists, and even young children often share the same space. 🔎 In Bergedorf, Hamburg’s key safety improvement areas, AMIGOS is piloting a “superblock-inspired” solution to enhance co-habitation among cyclists, pedestrians, and playing children around a local school.
